Barackula: Obama The Vampire Slayer

During the most expensive presidential campaign in history, when some of the candidates are dropping more than $1 million a day on TV ads, you really have to wonder if that old saying about any publicity being good publicity still applies.



Take the upcoming movie "Barackula — The Musical," for instance. Sort of like the instant Web hit Will.I.Am video/song "Yes We Can," the political horror film by first-time director Mike Lawson (Bootleg Bandy from "American Pie Presents Band Camp," among other credits) uses Obama's own inspiring words as its source material.



Only "Barackula — The Musical" uses them to tell the fictional story of a young Barack Obama fighting off vampires at his alma mater, Harvard Law School. Currently in post-production and slated to debut online within the next few weeks, "Barackula" is described by Lawson as a "short political horror rock musical about young Barack Obama having to stave off a secret society of vampires at Harvard when he was inducted into presidency at the Harvard Law Review in 1990."



In the flick, the vampire-fighting Obama, played by newcomer Justin Sherman ("The Man Who Couldn't") struggles to persuade the Ivy League vampire society that "opposing political philosophies can coexist or else the society may transform Obama to the dark side." Oh, and along the way you get to see some dancing Harvard student vampires.

The Blight of Bigotry That Is Still With Us

South Carolina is a disturbing example of how difficult it is for people of good will to dispose of toxic layers of bigotry. Audience members listen to US Democratic presidential candidates debate in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Monday.

The political mantra this year is "change." But South Carolina, where the Confederate flag still flies on the grounds of the State Capitol, is a disturbing example of how difficult it is for people of good will to dispose of the toxic layers of bigotry that have accumulated over several long centuries.



On Saturday, in a cold, steady rain, voters turned out for the Republican primary. Nearly all of them -- close to 100 percent -- were white. At a dinner here Saturday night, I was reminded ruefully by one of the guests: "It used to be the Democratic Party that was the white man's party in South Carolina. Now it's the GOP. The black people vote next Saturday."



They still honor Benjamin Tillman down here, which is very much like honoring a malignant tumor. A statue of Tillman, who was known as Pitchfork Ben, is on prominent display outside the statehouse.



Tillman served as governor and US senator in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A mortal enemy of black people, he bragged that he and his followers had disenfranchised "as many as we could," and he publicly defended the murder of blacks.

Its Huckabee and Obama in Iowa!

Mike Huckabee was propelled to the top, not surprisingly, by the Religious Right. His views on gays and abortion among other issues(homosexuality is a sin and a learned behavior and abortion is a crime) are in sync with the sociopolitical agenda of Religious Conservatives.

Senator Obama's Iowa win came as a result of the support he enjoys among young voters who see him as the harbinger of change in Washington DC. To many, Barack Obama represents a much needed departure from the political establishment, the status quo and the time-honored "politics as usual" practiced in D.C.

What do I think? Being a woman, I like to think that our nation has come a long way, baby. And I am not talking about the old cigarette commercials either. I am talking about the possibility that a woman might become our next commander in chief. To me, it is exciting and exhilarating. Having said that however, I do not believe that Hillary Rodham Clinton represents a significant departure from the "good old boys" club that has controlled Washingtonian politics since forever. She is nevertheless, the best hope the Democrats have of regaining control of the White House. The fact that she's been around the block, so to speak, makes her in the eyes of many people, a more viable presidential candidate and by contrast, gives a neophyte like Obama a definite disadvantage. And staying on Barack Obama, the following question also has to be addressed: Is the United States of America with its not so distant past submerged in the painful, shameful past of institutionalized racism prepared to elect a (gasp!) black president?
